Xavier Atienza was a nine-year-old third grader at College Gardens ES in Rockville, Maryland. He was also a black belt in tae kwon do, a dancer, and a beautiful little boy who loved roller coasters, his pets, his parents and sister. On September 2, 2013 Xavier was taken to Children's Hospital in DC after experiencing a high fever and seizures. He was immediately placed in a medically induced coma. Multiple tests and a brain biopsy concluded Xavier was suffering from a rare illness called encephalitis (brain swelling). Xavier was placed on a ventilator and endured constant seizures. Doctors from around the country worked tirelessly for many months hoping to identify the cause of this terrible illness.
Tragically, Xavier passed away on January 12, 2014. Those who were
fortunate enough to know him will remember his boundless energy, grace, determination and friendship.
